GMSI Award 2016 – Welcome and Introduction

David Bates

This lecture was given at the Grant for Multiple Sclerosis Innovation Awards Event on September 15, 2016 in London. The GMSI award is sponsored by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

The Grant for Multiple Sclerosis Innovation (GMSI) Awards event was held on September 15, 2016 at the ECTRIMS conference in London, UK. The GMSI award is sponsored by Merck KGaA in Darmstadt, Germany. The original idea for the grant was initiated in 2012 at ECTRIMS as a way to fund innovative translational research into MS. The suggestion was for up to €1 million to be given in funding and the goal was to improve our understanding of MS and to provide benefits to those with MS. A focus has been on the genesis of the disease, but Professor Bates commented there is much work to be done on finding predictive markers to identify MS subtypes, and to use these markers to help select the most appropriate therapy for individual patients. Researchers are also striving to find new molecules, concepts and targets that will lead to innovative treatments.
